From soft and subtle to bold and bright, a great red lip can transform a look! In the last few years – clean beauty has made amazing strides in the pigment and performance of the red lip.

Traditional/conventional lipsticks may look amazing, but what is lurking beneath the surface of these formulas is anything but pretty. Retinyl Palmitate, Synthetic Fragrance, Geraniol, Octinoxate and Parabens are just a few of the toxic ingredients commonly found in lipsticks (and all of which rank 7 and higher on the EWG Skin Deep Safety Guide). Because lipstick is not only absorbed through our skin but also ingested – this makes them a potential double toxic whammy!

In addition, in 2007 the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that two-thirds of the 33 red lipsticks they tested contained lead, which makes it even more important to start the transition to clean beauty. Lead and other heavy metals accumulate in our system over time impacting our nervous system, immune system and kidneys.  Even low level exposure over extended amounts of times can result in significant health impacts. In adults, lead poisoning can manifest in a multitude of symptoms including, fatigue, irritability, pain, GI problems, headaches, insomnia and memory loss (just to name a few)

The good news is that with the evolution of clean beauty – there are now safer ways to sport your favorite red lip! These are a few of our favorites!
