Protein Powders: Whey or Collagen?

I’ve been drinking a morning smoothie with Whey Protein powder as a staple ingredient for seriously 20 years. Recently however, there has been a lot of buzz around emerging protein powders, specifically Collagen Protein, which has warranted my attention.

After a serious amount of research and product testing, I’ve landed on continuing Whey but also adding in Collagen to my daily smoothie. Here’s why...

Whey protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s absorbed quickly into the gut and aids with gaining lean muscle mass as well as acting as an antioxidant.

Collagen protein is the key structural protein that ensures the cohesion, elasticity, and regeneration of all of our connective tissues. It builds stronger bones, improves joint mobility, strengthens ligaments and bolsters healthy skin, hair, nails and teeth.

It’s my opinion these proteins deliver different benefits, all of which I’d like to receive, thus my decision to now take both.

When looking for a Whey Protein, make sure it is grass-fed, cold-processed, antibiotic free, hormone free, contains no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, or preservatives.  Here are two that I use that meet the criteria:

ProMix Whey Protein

Dr. Axe Whey Pro Vanilla

For Collagen Protein, look for high quality, grass-fed collagen. I use both of these:

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

Dr. Axe Multi Collagen Protein
