I knew I wanted to write abut D1 Sports Training and its’ founder Will Bartholomew but I couldn't decide whether the piece should live in the Entrepreneur or Amazing Company section of Life Smart. I ultimately decided it belonged here in Amazing Companies because the culture at D1 is like nothing like I’ve experienced before in the Fitness Industry.
Will shares below that he started D1 because he needed a place to train like a Division I athlete, which he was. Many of the D1 locations are now owned by professional athletes like Peyton Manning, Vonn Miller and Chris Paul.
What is so unique to D1 is there are pro-athletes training alongside "average Joes + Janes" with each person trying to be better, faster and stronger in an environment which is not intimidating. It’s impressive and to create this culture is extremely difficult for a company to achieve.
What is also unique to D1 is their Family Training + Youth Programming. Will believes that "a family that trains together has proven results of a strong relationship!" I personally couldn't agree more and am truly inspired by the D1 mission of developing people as athletes on and off the field.
See what Will has to say below and side bar....this guy left me in the dust during sprints- yikes.
CD: Why did you start D1?
WB: I started the D1 because I needed a place to train like a Division I athlete. Really couldn't find a community, environment, and experience that replicated what I experienced in college.
CD: What does “train like an athlete” mean to you?
WB: It means that every workout has five parts: dynamic warm-up, performance, strength, core/conditioning, and cool down stretch. The workouts follow Periodization which is a progressive program that allows each athlete to maximize their potential.
CD: You started D1 in 2003 (is that right?), what keeps you going?
WB: Founded the company in 2001, what keeps me going is our Why: motivating others to be their best. Everything we do points back to this. Our style of training as well as the experience continues to motivate people to achieve their goals.
CD: Talk to us about D1’s Family Training. What is it and and why is it important to you?
WB: Our family training is unique in the marketplace. We promote the adult training in the form of boot camps and strength workouts, while the youth can train in our Rookie, Developmental, Prep workouts.
A family that trains together has proven results of a strong relationship!
CD: Words of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
WB: My advice would be to have extreme patience, resolve, perseverance. Nothing great in life happens overnight. During your journey have a positive attitude and commit to doing 10 times the level activity than what you think.
